Still Occupied

Images on this site are arranged into rough areas by location as in my book 'Still Occupied', available on Blurb. Eventually this site will contain all the images in that book and more.

The statue was discussed by the Riverside Area Committee in 2016, and the most relevant information is this: The statue was commissioned by Christopher Pickering in 1910 and situated in a timber yard in Spring Bank West (opposite Chanterlands Avenue) from 1913
Bought from British Railways in 1965 by Robert Holtby for his garden at Dowthorpe Hall, Skirlaugh, but never moved there.
Moved to the garden of Mr Gilbert Baitson's Edwardian Auction Galleries (Anlaby Road) on 14.9.1973 and moved again in 1991 to Baitson's new premises at Wiltshire Road, Hull (SH)

Alan Smalley:
I know the story behind this as my Stepfather bought the statue which he later sold to Gilbert Baitson who he knew well. The statue was made by a stone mason who had a yard on Spring bank opposite Chants Avenue. Edward was due to make a Royal visit to Hull which was a few months away, the stone mason apparently decided to hurriedly make a statue of him in the hope that the council would buy it for the visit.

The Council had other plans and declined, so the statue stood in the corner of the masons yard. The yard was then bought by a timber merchants with the statue still in situ, my Stepfather regularly bought his timber from there and became interested in the story of the statue one day whilst discussing it with the owner of the yard the owner jokingly said if you like it that much I will sell you it. They agreed a price and my Stepfather bought it.

Shortly afterwards Gilbert Baitson moved to new premises on Anlaby road which he intended to name the Edward the seventh sale rooms. He then offered to buy the statue to use as an advert outside the showrooms and that’s how it came to be there. The showrooms later moved again to Dairycoates and may still be there. When it was moved from Spring bank to Anlaby road it was shown on local tv, and there are quite a few newspaper articles and photos of the move in existence as well.
